The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, HURIWA, on Wednesday raised alarm over an alleged midnight police operation in Imo State, calling on the Inspector-General of Police to urgently investigate the incident and ensure accountability.

The group said it received a formal petition submitted to the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone 9 Headquarters, Umuahia, by a legal firm, detailing a lingering family dispute linked to the death of Mr. Vitus Ugbaja, who reportedly passed on in July 2025 in Kafanchan, Kaduna State.

According to the petition, disagreements had arisen between members of the deceased’s family and his widow, Mrs. Chibuzor Ugbaja, over burial arrangements slated for March 21 and 22, 2026, as well as issues surrounding the late man’s property.

However, HURIWA expressed particular concern over an alleged incident that occurred in the early hours of the day.

In a press statement signed by its National Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko, the group said it was deeply disturbed by claims that security operatives carried out an operation at about 3:00am at the family residence in Imo State.

The rights body noted that the petition alleged that some individuals were taken away during the operation, describing the development as troubling and raising questions about due process and police conduct.

“This development, if established, raises serious concerns about professionalism, adherence to due process, and respect for fundamental rights,” HURIWA’s statement read.

HURIWA warned that any use of security agencies in matters relating to civil disputes, including family disagreements over burial rites and inheritance, could undermine public confidence in law enforcement institutions.

“This is a dangerous path that could erode the neutrality expected of the police and weaken public trust, especially if proper procedures were not followed,” Onwubiko stated.

The group further noted that the matter was reportedly already before senior police authorities, a situation it said makes it imperative to clarify the circumstances surrounding the operation and whether appropriate approvals were obtained.

HURIWA, therefore, called on the Inspector-General of Police to order a thorough and transparent investigation into the incident, identify officers involved, and determine compliance with established rules of engagement.

It also urged the police hierarchy to take necessary disciplinary measures where infractions are established and to ensure that the rights of all parties involved are protected.

In addition, the organisation appealed to the Imo State Police Command to provide clarification on the incident in order to reassure the public and reinforce confidence in the system.

HURIWA stressed that law enforcement agencies must continue to operate within the confines of the law, noting that adherence to due process remains critical to maintaining order and justice in society.

“The rule of law must remain the guiding principle in all operations, and any deviation should be promptly addressed in line with existing regulations,” the group added.
