A new sports media platform, First Daily Sports, is set to go live on May 1, with its promoters saying it will focus on telling sports stories from the perspective of fans.

The platform, which is an offshoot of First Daily News, is entering the space at a time when digital sports coverage continues to evolve, with increasing demand for more engaging and relatable content.

Speaking ahead of the launch, the Founding Editor, Ben Ugbana, said the idea behind First Daily Sports came from years of observing how sports stories are reported and how fans actually consume them.

According to him, while most coverage focuses on results and breaking news, the real energy of sports comes from the fans.

“For me, it’s simple—no fans, no game,” he said. “You can talk about scores and transfers all day, but the passion, the arguments, the excitement—that’s what really drives the game.”

He added that the new platform is designed to reflect that reality by putting fan interests at the centre of its content.

“At First Daily Sports, we are not just looking at what happened, but how it affects the fans and why it matters to them,” Ugbana said. “That’s the difference we are bringing.”

The platform will cover a range of sports, including football, athletics, basketball, tennis, Olympic sports, disability sports, table tennis, and combat sports, with particular attention to Nigerian athletes and competitions.

It is also expected to feature commentary, interviews, and a weekly video podcast that will focus on trending issues and conversations within the sports community.

Ugbana noted that the team would combine fast-paced reporting with deeper storytelling, adding that the goal is to create content that feels closer to how fans actually experience sports. “We want people to come to us not just for updates, but for understanding and connection,” he said.

With its official launch date set for May 1, First Daily Sports is positioning itself as a platform that aims to connect more directly with sports audiences and offer a different approach to how stories are told.
