The UNESCO-Institute for African Culture and International Understanding has advised Nigerian teachers to adopt the Culturo-Techno-Contextual Approach (CTCA) for effective teaching and learning in schools.

The Institute gave the advice during a workshop organised for teachers at the Lagos State University International School, held at the Africa Centre of Excellence for Innovative and Transformative STEM Education (ACEITSE), LASU.

According to the facilitator, the Culturo-Techno-Contextual Approach (CTCA), will equipped teachers with the knowledge and skills to integrate culturally relevant pedagogy into their teaching practices.

Addressing participants at the workshop, an associate expert at the Institute and the convener of the training, Dr Adekunle Ibrahim Oladejo affirmed that for teachers to effectively teach students in schools, particularly in Africa, indigenous practices, cultural referents and technological tools must be integrated into their teaching practices.

He stressed that such approach is capable of making lessons more engaging and meaningful for students.

Oladejo disclosed that the primary objective of the training was to explore the benefits of integrating culturally relevant pedagogy to foster and safeguard cultural diversity among secondary school students.

He said “The institute is dedicated to preserving Africa’s cultural heritage and promoting a renaissance in African cultures through research, capacity building, and policy dialogue by implementing the 2005 UNESCO Convention.

“By fostering cultural diversity and enhancing digital literacy, the training has laid the foundation for promoting cross-cultural understanding and meaningful learning experiences among secondary school students”, he added

The training equipped teachers with the knowledge, skills, and motivation to adopt the Culturo-Techno-Contextual Approach 2.0 in their classrooms.
