A cleric, Prof. Sanni Amidu, has expressed dissatisfaction with the planned protest by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC)  against  50 per cent increase in telecoms tariff.

Amidu, the Chief Imam of Lagos State University, expressed his view in an interview with Newsmen in Lagos on Friday.

The NLC had planned the protest for Feb. 4.

According to Amidu, telecommunications companies are suffering high cost of running business like other business concerns.

“They have been subjected to the withdrawal of investment by investors due to poor returns and security challenges.

“High cost of diesel to keep stations running, among other challenges, are affecting them.

“Telcos are business concerns out to make profit,” he said.

He said that such a protest could scare investors  and cause damage if hijacked by hoodlums.

Amidu added that  NLC did not protest when electricity tariff was increased.

He said that NLC should protect  consumers by ensuring quality services and sanctions for infractions.

Recall that the Federal Government recently approved 50 per cent increase in telecom tariff.

Telecommunications companies  had proposed 100 per cent increase.
