The Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) has called on elder statesman Chief Afe Babalola to approach the alleged defamation and cyberbullying case against rights activist Dele Farotimi with mercy and understanding.
In a statement released on Friday by its Publicity Secretary, Mr. Yinka Oguntimehin, the OPC expressed concern over the controversy surrounding Farotimi’s recent arrest and detention, which has drawn significant public attention.
The OPC highlighted the need for justice while questioning the manner of Farotimi’s detention, emphasizing that defamation is a civil matter and does not warrant criminal arrest and detention.
The statement reads in part:
“We are concerned that two illustrious sons of the Yoruba race—a father and elder statesman, Chief Afe Babalola, and his ‘son,’ who is also a lawyer and rights activist, Dele Farotimi—are engaged in a legal battle.
“As an organization committed to justice and fairness, we find it troubling that the issue has generated various reactions across the country.
“Chief Afe Babalola is a beacon of hope and a legal icon whose contributions to Nigeria’s legal profession and education sector are immeasurable. His legacy includes training over 300 lawyers and producing several Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs) in a career spanning more than six decades.
“With such a sterling reputation and global respect, no one can tarnish the image of this revered personality.
“We, therefore, appeal to Chief Afe Babalola to resolve this issue with wisdom and understanding, as this would be the most honorable way to address the lingering dispute.”
The OPC reiterated its respect for Chief Babalola, describing him as a towering figure in law and education, while urging a peaceful resolution to the matter for the greater good of all involved.
