Kogi Cassava City gets $25m boost

LOKOJA—Cassava City in Osara, Kogi State, has received a major boost following plans by Contec Global, Geron Oil & Gas and JIL Farms to invest about $25 million into the cassava farms.

Director, Contec Global, Dr Sashi Mozumder, who made this known at the Cassava City Day in Lokoja, said his company in partnership with Geron Oil & Gas, Praj India and NNPC would be producing 40,000 litres of bio-ethanol per day.

MD, Geron Oil & Gas, Mr. Haruna Madisca along with Mr. Yakubu Danjuma, representing NNPC Renewable Energy Department, confirmed the commitment of their organisations to the project, saying the Environmental Impact Assessment and Soil Tests were ongoing.

Also, MD, JIL Farmers, Dr. Ayoade Akere, who said his firm would be investing in cattle production in the city and would derive their feed from cassava, stressed that they had already performed corporate social responsibility projects in education and health care within the cassava city.

Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, representative, Onoja Enenche said it had already verified over Cassava City 240 farmers for Enhanced Anchor Borrowers Programme.

On his part, Commissioner for Agriculture, Mr. Kehinde Oloruntoba, eulogised Governor Yahaya Bello and reiterated his commitment to transform agriculture in Kogi State with emphasis on cassava.

The State Coordinator, APPEALS Projects, Dr. Sanni Ozomata, stated that the World Bank project will support the cassava city in terms of infrastructure and value addition.

The Managing Director Kogi Agricultural Development Project (ADP) Mr. Okatayi said with the success story of the Cassava City, the concept will be replicated across Kogi with maize, rice and other crops.
