A group, the Coalition for Change in Nigeria, has disagreed with former President, Olusegun Obasanjo over his recent stance on the state of the nation.

The group said Obasanjo, who is supposed to act as an elder statesman got it wrong especially in blaming President Muhammadu Buhari-led government of not doing well.

The group also said Obasanjo would be meddling in the affairs of government by continually criticising Buhari.

Comrade Jonathan Ogwuche, Secretary General of the group, at a press conference on Tuesday, also said the disagreement chief Obasanjo had with his vice, Atiku Abubakar, when he was president set the stage for disputes between governors and their deputies.

According to him, “Obasanjo had last week claimed he sacrificed for the nation by fighting, “shedding blood” to defend the country during the civil war and even been sent to jail over a coup allegation, he was innocent of.”

Reacting, however to the ex-president’s assertion, Ogwuche said Obasanjo should stop what he described as intervening in some affairs he should not.

He said, “When he (Obasanjo) received a former governor of Sokoto State, Alhaji Attahiru Bafarawa at his Presidential Library in Abeokuta, Ogun state, he made other interventions that actively placed him in the arena of partisan politics.

“However, while Obasanjo has the right to participate in the affairs of the country, he does not have the moral ground to make such intrusions.

Ogwuche said “Obasanjo warned his then vice president that it was a presidency and not a co-presidency. It was this attitude of his that created the mindset that a deputy is a spare tire, a situation that set the foundation for the many acrimonious relationship between governors and their deputies across many states and one that has continued to plague the nation till now.

“Since discovering that no one wants him, he has started hobnobbing with the same PDP he claimed to have resigned from after his coalition.

“We note that Dr. Obasanjo continues to talk with the air of a kingmaker, citing how he supported President Buhari to emerge in 2015. This precisely is the problem.

“We commend President Buhari for resisting his interference in the governance of Nigeria.

“We have the duty, as citizens, to hold the government accountable. We must begin to look within our ranks for those that will speak truth to power.”
