APC running broken government — Secondus

By Dirisu Yakubu

ABUJA—NEWLY elected national chairman of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Prince Uche Secondus, has berated the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, for running a broken government since taking over the reins of governance in 2015.

He stated this yesterday at the handing over ceremony by the National Caretaker Committee, NCC, to the new National Working Committee, NWC, at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja.

The elated chairman, while thanking the Makarfi-led committee for conducting a transparent and credible convention, said Nigerians were now better informed to make critical decisions in 2019.

“The APC and their government are broken. They are running a broken government. We need to rescue our nation from their hands to rebuild our country once more.  Nigerians can no longer be fooled by false propaganda. They will hear the truth and the truth will save the country, not false propaganda.

“We will never be distracted by the ruling party and their kind of false propaganda. Nigerians know the truth now that all they have been saying in the last two years are mere lies; to revenge and to intimidate Nigerians,” he said.

However, the APC reacted to Secondus’ comment, saying the ruling party had chosen not to respond to every comment, or verbal attact on the party by the PDP.

APC’s National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Bolaji Abdullahi, said:  ‘’I don’t feel the need to respond each time the PDP says something.  We know what kind of criticism to take serious and which to simply ignore.’’

However, while urging members of the party to rally round the new leadership, Secondus lauded the contribution of Makarfi to the stability of the party during its trying times.

“Senator Makarfi, you are the one that God chose at the right time in Port Harcourt in confidence.

‘’You know, power comes from God. So whether you like his (Makarfi) face or not, he had a mission and he has accomplished that mission in the most trying times of our party, at a time people were so sacred and afraid that there would be nothing like the PDP.

‘’You are our hero. History will remember you.  Mr. chairman, you have organised the best convention in the history of any political party in our nation,” he said.

He called on all contestants who lost at the polls to join hands with the new executive committee to move the party forward in the right direction.

He said:  “By the special grace of God, elections have come and gone and I declare to you that there is no victor, no vanquished.

“Our first assignment will be to bring all and sundry together, that is reconciliation. We reassure leaders of our party especially those who contested this election that this party belongs to all of us. We have already started work and by the   grace of God, it will be productive.

“PDP is the only platform that does not belong to any group or big man. This is a party that provides for the big, the small and the less privileged.  The era of impunity is over.

“We will make sure that there is no more imposition. We will make sure that the era of impunity has come and gone and we want to warn our leaders and ourselves that with this take over today, impunity has come and gone.

“The old order is gone. We will operate in the new order. In the next couple of days, the NWC will decide when we will have our retreat. And after the retreat, we will come out with policies and direction and by the grace of God, we will hit the ground running.

Responding, Makarfi on behalf of the caretaker committee, expressed confidence in the ability of the new leadership to reposition the PDP, preparatory to taking over of power in 2019.

“The task before us is a task that requires trusted and capable men and women who will transverse the length and breadth of this country to reconnect where the connection is affected by bad weather,” he said amidst thunderous applause from members of the NWC.
