ABEOKUTA—A 22-year-old suspected drug peddler, Matthew Olusi, has been arrested by men of the Special Intelligence Squad of the Controller General of Prisons, Ogun State Command, for attempting to smuggle weed suspected to be Indian hemp into Old Abeokuta Prison, Ibara, Ogun State.

Vanguard gathered that the suspect reportedly hid the substance wrapped in a polythene bag in his pants and clothes to beat the security at the gate.

The Controller of Prison, Ogun State Command, Abolade Benson, who confirmed the incident, said the suspect was nabbed on Monday at the gate lodge with the substance concealed in his cloth and pant.

Benson said the suspect was nabbed following a tip-off, adding that the action was to compromise the security in the Prison.

He, however, said the suspect, after interrogation, confessed that he wanted to smuggle it into the prison for some of his friends, who were inmates.

The State Controller said the suspect has been handed over to the officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, for further investigation and subsequent prosecution.

It will be recalled that a female was arrested with a mobile phone last Month by the same Intelligence Squad in her attempt to smuggle the gadget into the prison.

Benson said the prohibited articles constitute a danger to staff members and prisoners alike, adding that they remain inimical to discipline, reformation and rehabilitation strategy.

Benson appealed to the general public to identify with the commitment of the Prisons Service to eradicating drug abuse and other vices in and around prison formations.
