The Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) on Wednesday urged patriotic Nigerians and other stakeholders to support the Nigeria Police Force to provide security to the populace.

The National Chairman, PCRC, Mr Faruk Maiyama, who made the call at a news conference in Abuja, said that the call became necessary following recent attacks on the force.

“The PCRC wish to use this medium to call on patriotic members of the public to assist and support the police and its leadership at all levels to enable it improve on its performance.

“We have observed with dismay the recent attack on the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force, which is capable of tarnishing its image.

“The PCRC will not remain silent nor fold its arms in the face of wanton, deliberate and unbecoming smear campaigns against the force as an institution,“ he said.

He urged Nigerians not to distract the force from discharging its constitutional duties of maintaining law and order in the country, especially in the face of the numerous security challenges.

Maiyama advised any aggrieved persons or group to avail themselves with the services of the established anti-corruption agencies to make their allegations.

He said that the committee would not condone nor tolerate corruption and at the same time would not support blackmail and intimidation from any quarter.

The chairman said that the committee was also interfacing with the National Assembly, to ensure speedy passage of the Police Reform Trust Fund before the legislators.

He said that the passage of the bill would solve the recurring problem of paucity of fund in the force.
