Akoko Edo monarchs backs Adjoto’s Speakership

By Simon Ebegbulem

BENIN CITY—TRADITIONAL rulers from Akoko-Edo Local Government Area, Edo State, yesterday, drummed support for the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Mr Kabiru Adjoto, urging those against his speakership to embrace his leadership in the interest of the state.

The traditional rulers, who disassociated themselves from a meeting held at the palace of the Otaru of Auchi, where some of the traditional rulers called that the speakership be moved back to Edo Central where it is zoned to, stressed the need for traditional rulers to stay out of the politics of the state House of Assembly where “The lawmakers have the right to elect the leadership they want.”

Speaking yesterday during a solidarity visit on the Speaker, Alhaji Adjoto, Chairman of Akoko-Edo Traditional Council, HRH Eshimokhai Idogu 111,  the Olokpe of Okpe, who spoke on behalf of 10 other  traditional rulers, noted that Akoko Edo council where Adjoto also hails from, had been marginalised over the years and it will be wrong for anybody to deprive the people the Speakership now that providence had brought it to the area.

“The emergence of Adjoto has broken the jinx which has been militating against our progress. We want to put it on record that the Akoko-Edo traditional  rulers do not recognised the so called Edo North traditional council. There is no law establishing Edo North traditional council. Each council is autonomous and whatever might have transpired at a any palace or council, we are not part of it.

“Therefore, we have called here to pay a solidarity visit to the new speaker and to assure him that we are solidly behind him,” he said.

Also speaking, the traditional ruler of Somorika, Sule Idaiye, Imah IV, urged other traditional rulers in the state to concentrate on challenges that are confronting their various domain instead of meddling into politics.
