2018 FIFA WORLD CUP QUALIFIERS BETWEEN NIGERIA AND ALGERIA HELD AT THE GODSWILLL AKPABIO STADIUM, UYO, AKAW-IBOM STATE
Enugu – Former Green Eagles Goalkeeper, Emmanuel Okala, on Sunday urged players and technical crew of Super Eagles to keep the flag flying in order to be at Russia 2018 World Cup.
Okala gave the advice during interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on the Super Eagles 3 – 1 victory over Algeria in Uyo on Saturday.
He said the country was relatively lucky now to have a crop of fine and dedicated players.
“I am now a happy man, that in my life time we will again assemble another set of fine and patriotic players to place Nigeria at the upper echelon of football where it rightly belonged.
“We have a fairly stable team now; which we can count on as material for a Senior World Cup.
“ However, the players and technical crew should keep the flag flying to keep Nigerians happy and bring honour to our great country’’, he said.
Okala, who had served as goalkeeper for the national team also said that the technical crew had to work on some departments of the team as it was yet to form into perfect unit.
“We need to strengthen all the departments especially the defence so that the lapse that occurred during the last minute of the game would not repeat itself
“You will recall similar error was committed at the last minute in our first qualifier match with the Zambians, we cannot afford to do at the World stage and not be punished’’, he said.
NAN recalls that Nigeria have recorded six points from two matches, while Cameroon are second on the table with two points after they forced Zambia to a 1-1 draw.
Zambians are placed third ahead of Algeria with one point each.
