Attempted murder of Enugu ex-Commissioner: SARS arrests masterminds

By Francis Igata

ENUGU—After eight days of being fugitives, the Special Anti-Robbrey Squad, SARS, yesterday, arrested the alleged masterminds of the attempted murder of Enugu ex-commissioner, Beloved-Dan Anike. The suspects were  Francis Anike and Andrew Okolo.

The former commissioner, who is also a zonal pastor of the Redeem Christian Church of God was ferociously attacked over his opposition to the indiscriminate resale of people’s land and parcellation of 20 plots of land in Umuchigbo Secondary School by Francis, who is the Chairman of Umuchigbo-Iji-Nike community.

This came on a day,the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, and the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, PFN, Enugu-East Local Government Area Chapter, rebuked the nonchalance of the Nigerian Police over the delay in arresting the suspects while demanding for their prosecution on charges of attempted murder.

A statement jointly signed by CAN Chairman, Rev. Henry Omenkenkwu, and PFN Chairman, Apostle Joshua Nnamani, respectively read: ”We condemn the nonchalant attitude of the police both at the Nike Division and SARS,and we want to know why they behaved the way they did over the attack. We say this because this is not in their character. What went wrong should be investigated and the reason behind it should be made public.

“We are always thanking God that the police is now doing a good work but they failed in this matter. Therefore we ask,is it because the person attacked is a pastor?

“Or did anybody ask the police not to respond to the cry of these innocent people. We are confused and may be forced to approach a higher command to tell us what we want to hear.

“This is a barbaric, inhuman and wicked handwork of evil men. It has to stop so that peace will be restored in Nike community.

“We also call on the noble sons and daughters of Nike community to rise and condemn this dastardly act”.
