Tension in Maritime Academy over Minister’s choice of Rector

By Godwin Oritse

ORON community in Akwa Ibom state where the Maritime Academy of Nigeria, (MAN), is located has come under apprehension following Federal Government’s alleged plan to frustrate the emergence of an incumbent acting rector of the institute, whose name was given as Mr. Ante Mkpandiok, from becoming rector.

Vanguard gathered that the tension followed purported intelligence report that Transportation Minister, Hon. Rotimi Amachi has nominated a retired army major who later became an academic, Prof. Eminue Okon, as candidate for the job.

Aggrieved Oron stakeholders, comprising of individuals, groups and elders told Vanguard that the nomination of Okon is designed to effectively stall Mkpandiok who is the Registrar of the academy from emerging as Rector, a development they claimed is in bad faith and unacceptable to them.

They alleged that it was a plot by the transportation minister to divide the Oron people.

Angered by the report, an Oron youth leader, Hon. Ekpenyong Ekpo said the Transportation Minister is merely seeking ways to discredit his people to get the excuse to side-line those who have risen to the appropriate positions from becoming rector of the 40 year old academy.

Ekpo pleaded with President Muhammadu Buhari to call the transportation Minister to order to purge himself of his hatred of the Oro tribe by acceding to popular and grass root local support for his appointment.
