Rivers Assembly amends tenure of Caretaker C’ttees Chairmen

By Jimitota Onoyume

PORT HARCOURT—  Rivers State House of Assembly has amended the state’s Local Government Law  to enable the governor reappoint anyone into local government’s Caretaker Committee, beyond the mandatory two terms.

The 15 lawmakers present at the sitting, yesterday, passed the amendment.

Leader of the House, Mr Martins Amewhule and Whip, Evans Bipi, in their comments, said that the amendment would reward hard work, noting that the state governor will no longer be limited by law to reappoint anyone into local government caretaker committees beyond the mandatory two terms of three months when such a person has performed well.

“A Caretaker Committee appointed under sub-section 4, shall oversee the affairs of the local government for three months. The governor, in his discretion, can reappoint such a person for chairman or member, notwithstanding that the person has served two tenures,” the amendment read in part.
