Search for 2016 National Art Competition winner begins
“The theme for this year’s edition of the National Art competition “Shifting Boundaries”, is an exploration of the porous, situational, and ever changing concept of the boundary through artworks that will discuss and embody what a boundary was, is, and will become in the 21st century.” Those were the words of the Corporate Affairs Adviser, Nigerian Breweries Plc., Mr. Kufre Ekanem, during a press briefing in Lagos, announcing call for entries for the 9th edition of the competition.
How not to display, market African arts
For the much desired development and marketing of African arts to be actualised, there is need for African artists, curators and art collectors to focus more on displaying traditional art in contemporary African form, as the current way most of the artworks are displayed in most museums especially in western countries leaves much to be desired. This was the submission of Lydia Gatundu Galavu, Curator of Contemporary Art at the National Museums of Kenya during her presentation at the OYASAF Centre, Maryland, Lagos.
A brave New Bar
These words contained in an article published on August 9, 2012 articulated the case for reform of the processes for leadership succession at the Nigerian Bar. Four years later, on August 1, 2016 and for the first time in a quarter of a century, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), concluded its leadership elections based on universal suffrage. Far from the fulfilment of a prophecy, the recently concluded NBA election was a belated effort by the Association to update its governance and institutional processes. It was long overdue.
NBA: A theatre of absurdities
Lawyers in the society are looked upon by the society for salvation. If anything goes wrong in the country, the society would ask, what are lawyers saying, because lawyers are the conscience of the society. Indeed, the umbrella body of lawyers, the NBA had spoken, protested, shown direction and resisted tyrannical governments, but that was many years in the dim past. The body is now cowed, pocketed and compromised.
NBA Annual Conference: When frank talk reigns
THE 56TH annual general conference of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, which ended, last week, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State was characterised by frank talk aimed at building a stronger and more efficient Nigerian system. Out-gone National President of the body, Mr Austin Alegeh, SAN, set the ball rolling in his address at the opening ceremony, when he charged the Federal Government to fight corruption within the ambit of the law.

Amnesty International: A Stitch In Time
A stitch in time saves nine is a time worn expression but the extent to which we live by this dictum as a nation is to be seen in the way we address issues of national importance.
WAI, a war for the poor
ON Monday, August 8, 2016, we were told that the Federal Government had revived the War Against Indiscipline, WAI, a priority programme of Major General Muhammadu Buhari’s 1984/85 military regime. It was under the control of the late Major General Tunde Idiagbon, his Deputy (Chief of Staff, Supreme Headquarters).

Path to economic recovery
IF the truth must be told, Nigeria today is on the edge of a precipice – with its economy hanging perilously on the balance. The situation is so precarious that President Muhammadu Buhari will be seeking Emergency Powers to tackle the economy as soon as the National Assembly resumes from its vacation on September 12, 2016.
