LAGOS — ANGRY reactions, yesterday, trailed the arrest of the Speaker of Zamfara State House of Assembly, Alhaji Sanusi Rikiji, and three other principal officers of the House by the Department of State  Services, DSS, over alleged plot to impeach Governor Abdulaziz Yari.

Those, who spoke to Vanguard, unanimously stated that the alleged reason for the arrest, was not enough to have provoked such an action, noting that it was not in the purview of the DSS to interfere with the discharge of legislative duties.

The speakers include Chairman of Presidential Advisory Committee on Anti-corruption, Prof Itse Sagay; Second Republic lawmaker, Dr Junaid Mohammed and former Police Commissioner, Alhaji Abubakar Tsav.

No basis for the arrest

—Sagay

In his remarks, Sagay said: “Trying to impeach a governor is not a criminal offence. In fact, that is not a criminal offence at all. If that is the only reason, then, there is no basis for their arrest.”

DSS is becoming partisan — Mohammed

He said: “What has happened in Zamfara bothers on the issue of performance of the governor and the state Assembly is asking questions since the constitution gave them the power to do so. So why the involvement of the DSS when there was no breakdown of law and order? Their action is very condemnable.”

It’s dangerous for our democracy —Tsav

Tsav, said: “I think the development in Zamfara, if true, is wrong. They have not even commenced impeachment proceedings which they are constitutionally empowered to do.”
