IT was indeed a day of joy for Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs, in Uhogua Community, Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State, when the Naval Officers Wives Association, NOWA, brought the much-needed relief materials to them at their camp.
On receiving the relief materials which included bags of rice, cans of groundnut oil, yams, plantains, cartons of noodles, tomato, and many more, the IDPs had responded with dancing and shouts of joy, while profusely thanking God and the donors.
The items were received on behalf of the people by their two care-takers, Rev. Solomon Folorunsho and Pastor Evylen Omigie from the wife of the Chief of Naval Staff, Mrs Theresa Ibas and her team.
The visiting team was originally received at the Benin airport by the Flag Officer Commanding, Naval Logistics Command, Oghara, Rear Admiral Emmanuel Ofik, his wife, Pat, some officers and ratings of the command, as well as other NOWA members in Oghara, Sapele and Warri.
Both of them conducted Mrs Ibas and her team around the camp, showing them what the people were passing through. The IDPs used the opportunity to appeal to the relevant authorities to improve their living conditions, especially upgrading facilities at the camp.
The CNS’s wife promised to convey their plight to her husband for onward transmission to appropriate quarters.
NOWA did not stop its activities at the IDP camp.
The following day, the wife of the CNS and her team inaugurated the Delta Area Chapter of NOWA and appointed the wife of the Flag Officer Commanding, Naval Logistics Command, Oghara, Mrs Pat Ofik, as the Area Coordinator. Mrs. Ofik was then given the responsibility of overseeing the activities of NOWA, particularly the NOWA shopping complex in Oghara.
Mrs Ibas also commissioned a three-classroom block donated by the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission, DESOPADEC, to the Naval Primary School, Oghara, Ethiope West Local Government Area.
She laid the foundation stone of Chief Williams Makinde Squash Court, as well as the foundation stone of a shopping complex donated by DESOPADEC to NOWA, and the NOWA Hall donated by ASCON Nig. Ltd, measuring 30 by 15 metres. All the projects are located at the Nigeria Naval Barracks, Oghara.
