MAKURDI—Benue State government has received N28 billion from the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, as its share of the bailout fund from the Federal Government for payment of backlog of salaries to workers.
The government had, few days ago, announced the receipt of N15.5 billion from CBN for the payment of local government staff, adding that the balance of N12.5 billion for the payment of the arrears of the state workers was received last Wednesday.
Governor Samuel Ortom, who announced the receipt of the fund in Makurdi through his Senior Special Assistant on Media, Mr. Terver Akase, stated that a committee had been set up to handle the disbursement of the funds to workers without delay.
He said the committee would be headed by the Deputy Governor, Mr. Benson Abounu, while the Secretary to the State Government, SSG, Targema Takema and the State Head of Service, Adaikwu Inwata, would be members.
Other members of the committee include the Commissioner for Finance, representatives of academic and non-academic staff unions of the state-owned tertiary institutions and representatives of Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and the Trade Union Congress, TUC, Benue State chapters.
Governor Ortom was quoted as urging the committee to ensure that the payment of workers commenced immediately.
He added that all matters relating to the backlog be effectively addressed.
