Lagos—Non-academic Staff Unions in the Lagos State University, LASU, yesterday asked the state government to urgently implement the five-year single term for the post of the institution’s Vice Chancellor.

Meantime, the unions debunked allegations levelled against them by National Union of Lagos State Students, NULASS, even as it urged the government to disregard the threat issued by the students saying “they do not know the current state of the institution.”

This came barely 48 hours after the State House of Assembly approved the five-year single term to override the existing four-year, two-term tenure for occupants of that office.

The unions in an interview with Vanguard, argued that since the Federal Government implemented such measure for its institution, peace and harmony had returned to the federal institutions across the country.

Albert Agosu, Chairman of Non-Academic Staff Union, NASU-LASU told Vanguard that; “Since it worked for Federal Government institutions, I know that it will certainly bring peace to LASU.”

Also, Chairman of Senior Staff Association of Universities, SSANU-LASU, Mr. Oseni Saheed, added that; “This is what we have been clamouring for over the years. It will create room for stability in the university. Some of the Vice Chancellors after spending their first term, became so powerful and uncontrollable”.
