Diouf goal stuns champions City
PARIS (AFP) – A solo goal by Senegalese Mame Biram Diouf gave Stoke City a stunning 1-0 weekend win at reigning English Premier League champions Manchester City.

Diouf spent time at Manchester United and Blackburn Rovers and joined Stoke this year from Bundesliga outfit Hannover.

Recently retired Cameroon captain Samuel Eto’o scored on his debut for Everton, but former club Chelsea triumphed 6-3 at Goodison Park.

ENGLAND

MAME BIRAM DIOUF (Stoke City)

Senegalese striker Diouf provided the sensation of the Premier League weekend by scoring a fine solo goal as his side condemned champions Manchester City to a surprise 1-0 defeat. The former Manchester United man struck in the 58th minute at the Etihad Stadium, picking the ball up deep inside his own half and surging past Aleksandar Kolarov and Fernandinho before drilling the ball between the legs of City goalkeeper Joe Hart.

YAYA TOURE (Manchester City)

Toure endured an afternoon to forget as City slumped to the first defeat of their title defence. The Ivory Coast colossus saw a shot come back off the crossbar in the first half and was booked for diving in the closing stages, despite appearing to have a strong case for a penalty after being clattered by Stoke left-back Erik Pieters.

SAMUEL ETO’O (Everton)

Eto’o marked his Everton debut with a goal against his former club Chelsea, but ended up on the losing side in a madcap 6-3 defeat. The Cameroon great, who last week announced his retirement from international football, made it 4-3 in the 76th minute by guiding a clever header past goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois from a Leighton Baines free-kick, but further goals from Ramires and Diego Costa made the game safe for Chelsea.

JOHN OBI MIKEL (Chelsea)

Nigeria midfielder Mikel made a decisive came to help Chelsea see the game out at Goodison Park. A 75th-minute replacement for Willian, the 27-year-old set up Diego Costa for Chelsea’s sixth goal with a flashy back-heel after Everton substitute Muhamed Besic had conceded possession.

JEFF SCHLUPP (Leicester City)

Ghanaian wide player Schlupp had an eventful game as promoted Leicester held Arsenal to a 1-1 draw at the King Power Stadium. The 21-year-old was involved in an early clash of heads with Laurent Koscielny that was to force the Arsenal centre-back off later in the game and also teed up Leonardo Ulloa for Leicester’s 22nd-minute equaliser with a powerful run down the left flank followed by an inviting cross.

SPAIN

SOFIANE FEGHOULI (Valencia)

Algeria midfielder Feghouli played 81 minutes as Valencia continued their promising start to the season with a 3-0 win over 10-man Malaga. Feghouli played his part as his shot was handled by Weligton inside the area and Dani Parejo slotted home Los Che’s second goal on the rebound after Cameroonian Carlos Kameni had saved his penalty.

ABDOULAYE BA (Rayo Vallecano)

Senegalese defender Ba had an evening to forget at the Riazor as he unnecessarily handled inside the box in stoppage time to give Deportivo la Coruna a share of the spoils in a 2-2 draw. Rayo seemed on course for victory thanks to an Alberto Bueno double after Jose Rodriguez had put the hosts in front, but Ba’s indiscretion allowed Isaac Cuenca to bring Depor level from the penalty spot with the last kick of the game.

FRANCE

ABDELAZIZ BARRADA (Marseille)

France-born Morocco midfielder Barrada made his home debut for Marseille and scored just moments after coming on as a late substitute to wrap up a 4-0 win for his new side against Nice at the Stade Velodrome. Barrada, who began his career at Marseille’s arch-rivals Paris Saint-Germain, signed from Al-Jazira in the United Arab Emirates on a four-year deal last month.

AISSA MANDI (Reims)

Algeria international full-back Mandi, 22, who was born in France, put Reims in front in their game with Lens but could not stop his side losing 4-2 after the sending-off of Congo Brazzaville midfielder Prince Oniangue. Mandi featured for Algeria during their run to the last 16 of the World Cup in Brazil, but his club side have not enjoyed a good start to the season, collecting just one point from four matches.

JORDAN AYEW (Lorient)

Ghana forward Ayew left the company of his elder brother Andre at Marseille to seek regular first-team football with Lorient. The departure of Cameroon international Vincent Aboubakar has increased the pressure on the 22-year-old to perform but he got his first goal for his new club in the 4-0 win against Guingamp. Ayew notched the third goal on the night in the Brittany derby for a Lorient side also featuring the Ivory Coast’s Lamine Kone and Gabon defender Bruno Ecuele Manga.

JUNIOR TALLO (Bastia)

Burly Ivorian striker Tallo joined Bastia in mid-year after spending last season on loan with their Corsican rivals Ajaccio from Roma. Scorer of eight goals in an Ajaccio side that was relegated, Tallo has two goals in his first four games for his new club. Tallo gave Claude Makelele’s team the lead away to Ligue 1 leaders Bordeaux, although in the end they had to settle for a 1-1 draw.
