Three football players, two of them minors, and their driver died in a gun attack against their bus in Mexico’s troubled Guerrero state, authorities reported Saturday.
The vehicle, which was carrying the Chilpancingo Hornets team, was circling for a parking spot in the city of Iguala Friday, when an unknown group fired on it, the city’s secretary of public safety said.
The attack also injured the coach and nine teammates, all of whom were said to be recovering and out of danger.
Authorities said at least 11 people were killed in violent incidents across the state overnight.
Guerrero is one of Mexico’s poorest and most violent states, where a lucrative drug trade has flourished, especially in the regional capital Acapulco.
