BENIN — FORMER Chief Whip of the Senate, Senator Rowland Owie, yesterday, said that the appointment of Mr. Godwin Emefiele by President Goodluck Jonathan as the new governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, has addressed the alleged injustice suffered by the people of the South- South in appointments into that sector.

Owie, who commended what he described as the wisdom of the President in making that choice, said that those who described the President as weak must now hide their heads in shame after Emefiele’s appointment.

He urged President Jonathan to continue with his laudable reforms in other sectors of the economy, just as he commended him for ensuring the resolution of the problems that arose from the recent recruitment exercise of the Nigeria Immigration Services, NIS, which was poorly conducted.

Owie, who also is a leader of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Edo State, said: “I wish to congratulate Mr. Emefiele on his confirmation as the new CBN governor. I thank the Senate President, Senator David Mark and my other colleagues in the Senate, who rose above petty political considerations to get Mr. Emefiele confirmed.

“Above all, I thank Mr. President for the courage to name Mr Emefiele as CBN governor, the second CBN governor after the late Isong, from the South-South region. This is a good omen for the people of the South-South because for a very long time now, we have not held that position,” he said.
