One of the best New Year resolutions any one could make is to make water a top priority each morning. One thing many people do not know is that having the first glass of water as soon as they wake up also comes with its therapeutic benefits. While its importance is no secret, drinking water first thing in the morning can significantly alter your day for the better. It does not matter whether you’re aiming to lose weight or simply stay healthy. For several reasons, water is crucial to everyone’s morning routine. Drinking about six glasses of water daily is important for health. Make it a habit to drink water in the morning for best results.
Why drink water in the morning?
After a long night’s rest, it is common to wake up dehydrated. Hydration first thing in the morning is important, because it increases the rate at which new muscle and blood cells are produced. A hydrated body allows for a healthy flow of oxygen, allowing you to stay alert and energized. Up to 70 percent of the human body content is water.
The human brain cells contain about 85 percent of water, 75 percent of muscles is water, bones also contain about 25 percent water and 82 percent of blood consists of water. So water plays an important role in the proper functioning of the body. It is also helpful to consume foods that contain lots of water; for example soups (broth-based), vegetables and fruits.
Benefits of drinking water
Drinking water the first thing in the morning makes the skin glow. Water is known to purge toxins from blood, and as a result you get glowing skin. Water increases the rate at which new muscle and blood cells are produced. When you drink water first thing in the morning on a daily basis, you help balance your body’s lymph system to fight infections and balance the fluids in your body.
It is a long known secret that drinking water first thing in the morning, before eating anything, is a good way to purify the internal system. Drinking about one to three litres of chilled water daily will boost your body’s metabolism and helps purify the colon. When you drink water after you have woken up before eating anything, you are purifying your colon thereby making nutrients absorption easy.
Water first thing in the morning has been proven to cure illnesses such as vomiting, throat disease, menstrual and cancer disorders, eye diseases, diarrhoea, urine disease, kidney disease, meningitis, TB, Arthritis, headaches among others.
Water, especially lemon water is a natural detox. Drinking water flushes out toxins and impurities. Not only does this keep you healthy, but it also leads to clear skin. Water purifies the colon too, allowing for the proper absorption of nutrients. While a plain glass of water is great, adding lemon increases the rate of urination in the body, maximizing enzyme function and stimulating the liver for detoxification.

If you’re getting sick often, it could be that you’re not drinking enough water. Water plays a crucial part in maintaining a healthy a lymphatic system. When this system is balanced, your body can properly fight off infection. Studies have also shown that dehydration leads to higher cortisol levels, and, in turn, stress and sickness.
How to drink water for best results
At first, it may not be easy drinking six or more glasses of water at a go. However, it becomes easier as the body gradually becomes accustomed to the routine. Start by modifying the routine. Do not drink beverages that contain alcohol the previous night. The moment you wake up, even before you brush your teeth take four glasses of water, pause for about two minutes, and then drink the remaining two glasses of water. Ensure that the water you consume is clean. Alternatively, you may take the water in small amounts until it adds up to four glasses. Then clean/brush your teeth soon after and don’t eat or drink anything till after 45 minutes to one hour.
Dangers of not drinking enough water
There are some biological signs of thirst that your body displays which can be mistaken for being symptoms and signs of other conditions. If the root cause of these signs and symptoms is dehydration, you can avoid unnecessary and costly medical interventions by rehydrating your body. Conditions such as angina, breast and uterine cancer, leukemia , irregular menstruation, diabetes and kidney stones are indicated. Others include asthma, pulmonary tuberculosis, sinusitis, obesity, anaemia, constipation and hypertension.
