Lagos doctors allege harassment by striking health workers

BY CHIOMA OBINNA

LAGOS — Medical doctors under the employment of Lagos government, yesterday, alleged harassment by striking health workers, urging the state government to provide security for the doctors during the three-day warning strike that ends today.

Speaking on behalf of the medical doctors under the auspices of Medical Guild, the Chairman, Dr. Biyi Kufo, alleged that already some health workers had gone to some hospitals in the state, on Wednesday, to prevent doctors from working and also stop patients from being treated.

Kufo said some of the health workers had engaged some doctors in verbal and physical altercations and such acts were aimed at paralysing hospitals.

According to him: “ professionals have the right to fight for whatever they deem fit for them. But that does not mean they should stop others from performing their duties.

“Doctors are not on strike. But some hired functionaries of the striking group are harassing patients and doctors in some centres.

“We wish to appeal to the authorities to provide administrative and security arrangements in hospitals which will enable doctors to carry out their duties without hindrance.”

Meanwhile, Minister of Health, Professor Onyebuchi Chukwu in Abuja, on Wednesday, pleaded with health workers under the aegis of the Joint Health Sector Union to shelve the on-going strike.
