As part of efforts to cushion the effect of disaster in some parts of the country, the National Emergency Management Authority, NEMA, says it has donated some relief materials to the Lagos State government.

The relief materials were meant for families and victims of the devastating rain storm which hit Lagos in the second week of February, leaving several dead in its wake and destroying property worth millions of Naira.

Making the donation at the premises of the Ministry of Special Duties, Alausa, Ikeja, Air Commodore Alexander Bankole, who represented the Director General of NEMA, commended the Lagos State government on the efforts it had made to mitigate against disasters.

He also seized the opportunity to congratulate the State Governor, Mr Babatunde Fashola, on the successful commissioning of the Command and Control Centre, calling for a better working relationship between the State and Federal governments.

In his response, the Commissioner for Special Duties, Dr. Wale Ahmed who was accompanied by the Permanent Secretary, Dr Aderemi Desalu, expressed satisfaction at the prompt response from NEMA, saying the State, through the Special Duties Ministry, was sensitizing the public through the media on the need to desist from dumping refuse in drainage and canals.

The Commissioner also said the media was being used to inform the public about the emergency numbers available for use. Also present was NEMA South-West Zonal Coordinator Mr, Iyiola Akande.
