ENUGU—THE Enugu State government yesterday distributed 14-seater Nissan buses to 300 public and some mission secondary schools in the state.

Handing over the keys of the buses to the state chairman of Post Primary School Management Board, PPSMB, Governor Sullivan Chime said the gesture was in keeping with his administration’s commitment to ensure better quality education in the state.

Chime, who was represented by the Commissioner for Education Dr. Simon Ortuanya, explained that the buses would help provide conducive environment for teaching and learning for both teachers and students in their schools.

The governor said the vehicles would serve as motivation for the school and directed the school authorities to make the best use of the vehicles for only official functions like quiz, sports, competitions, movement of exam materials  and school excursion among others.

Describing education as one of the biggest industry in the state, the Governor pledged that government would continue to make it affordable and also provide those facilities needed to take the sector to the next level.

Receiving the keys, the chairman of PPSMB Enugu State, Mr. Gabriel Okafor described the gesture as clear demonstration of the administration of Governor Chime’s immeasurable interest in promoting education in the state.

Okafor recalled that the last time buses were distributed to secondary schools was in the seventies during the old Anambra State era and thanked the Governor for solving the transportation problems facing schools in the state.

The PPSMB boss advised the school principals to make good use of the vehicles and take teaching and learning to an enviable height in the state adding that to whom much is given much is expected.

The state chairman of All Nigeria Conference of Principals of Secondary Schools, ANCOPSS, Mr. Ben Enemuo described the action of government as the first of its kind in the state in the recent times and a giant stride and major boost to education development.

Enemuo specifically thanked the governor for making good his promise when he met with the principals at his lodge and pledged continued co-oporation and support of teachers in the state towards the realization of government’s dream to that sector of the government.
