Coach of the national under-23 team, Austin Eguaveon revealed on returning from Morocco on Tuesday, how he almost quit the job days before the London 2012 Olympics qualifier began on November 26.
Eguaveon who should have been playing in tomorrow’s final or at least the third place match, stated that he would have left long before the event in Morocco but stayed
back just to see the team through the tournament. He threw in the towel after he failed to qualify for the London 2012 Olympics having lost to Morocco and Senegal in two straight games.
“My contract had expired and I wanted to leave. But I didn’t want people to think that I quit because the team was not in a good position to win the ticket,” Eguaveon said in Lagos.
Eguaveon’s team was the only hope for Nigerian fans after the Eagles and the Falcons all crashed out in their respective pursuits of Nations Cup and Olympic female soccer tickets respectively.
