AWKA- Anambra State branch of the Conference of Nigerian Political Parties, CNPP, has threatened court action against the state government over the continued delay in conducting local government election in the state.

The state has not conducted local government election for nine years and chairman of the State Independent Electoral Commission, ANSIEC, Prof Titus Eze, who was preparing to conduct the exercise, was recently sacked and his court action against the state government has further stalled the conduct of the exercise.

Worried by the situation, CNPP threatened yesterday to use every constitutional means available to force Governor Peter Obi to conduct council polls and account for the state’s federal allocations to local governments since his regime came into being.

A statement by its chairman, Prince Isaac Onuka, and secretary, Mr. Ken Okafor, called on the people of the state at home and abroad to raise their voices by demanding for the immediate conduct of the exercise .

The statement also called on Anambra senators and members of the House of Representatives to move a motion to prevail on the Senate, Presidency and Accountant General of the Federation to freeze local government allocations of Anambra State.

The action, the group suggested, should remain in force until democratically elected local government administration took over responsibility at the local government level.

“Local government election is our right and we demand for it. Political parties will use every constitutional means available to force Governor Peter Obi to conduct it in Anambra”.

“He should also account for the billions of federal allocations to local governments which cannot be traced,” the group said.

The group commended those it described as illustrious sons of Anambra State, including the former speaker of the State House of Assembly, Chief Ifeanyichukwu Enemchukwu, and Chief Romny Ezeonwuka for rising up against what it described as injustice.
