The Nigeria-British Chambers of Commerce has expressed deep worries over the high cost of doing business in Nigeria, attributing it to corruption in the system.

President and Chairman of NBCC, Arc T.C Awagu, said that the private sector, which is meant to drive the economy cannot do so because,  the procurement system is laden with irregularities and corruption.

He said in order to address these challenges,  NBCC recently hosted the chairperson of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Mrs. Farida Waziri  on how to fight hydra-headed monster and chart ways  for the national recovery and economic growth of Nigeria.

According to him,  the purpose of the meeting was to see how they could assist in salvaging the situation. He expressed disappointment on the recklessness in public expenditure by some public office holders in terms of award of contracts and procurement.

Also speaking, the Director- General, BPPE, Eng. Emeka Ezeh,  x-trayed how and when corruption took upper stage in the  national life of the country. He stated that if public procurement practices in Nigeria must be achieved, there was need for a strong political support, strong international support needed to bring about reform in the system.
