Lagos – (NAN) A group under the aegis of the Dynamic Youth Organisation of Nigeria (DYON) on Saturday commended the Federal Government for the low-key celebration of the nation’s 51st independence anniversary.

Chief Isaac Udeh, the National President of the association, told newsmen in Lagos that the decision showed the present administration’s sober reflection on the state of the nation.

“We are particularly more touched by President Goodluck Jonathan’s resolve to tackle crime to a standstill,’’ Udeh told newsmen, and called for more efforts to ensure security of life and property.

He advised the government to enlist the support of telecom operators to assist the government in preventing and fighting crime, saying that most crimes were aided through telephone calls and messages.

“Network providers should be made part of the nation’s security team,’’ he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Federal Government decided on a low-key celebration of the country’s 51th independence anniversary to save cost.

Information and Communications Minister Labaran Maku had on Sept. 29 explained that the government took the decision because two ceremonies were marked with much fanfare in the past one year.

They are the country’s 50th anniversary in October 2010 and the inauguration of President Goodluck Jonathan on May 29.

In his broadcast to the nation on Oct. 1, Jonathan said that his administration would spare no effort in fighting crime, building peace, and securing the nation against internal threats and infiltration by violent groups from outside.

“We condemn all acts of violence and declare that such acts of mindless savagery shall not be allowed to define our country. We will not be deterred. Our resolve is strong.

“I have put in place a new and reinvigorated national security strategy to combat the threat to our safety,’’ he said.
