LAGOS- A new Vice-Chancellor has been appointed for Lagos State University, LASU. He is Professor John O. Obafunwa.
An expert in Pathology and Forensic Medicine, he was first appointed a professor in 2001.
The new vice-chancellor hailed from Ibonwon, in Epe Local Government Area of Lagos State.
He was a two-time provost of Lagos State University College of Medicine who transformed the college between 2006-2010, giving it an entirely new look.
Obafunwa is well- respected in Nigeria and globally as an erudite medical expert.
He is a member of the Governing Council elected from the congregation.
LASU has been going through crisis in recent times which led to crippling strikes that paralysed the institution for several months as academic staff, students, non-academic staff and other unions fell out with the former VC, Professor Lateef Hussain, who was indicted for alleged mismanagement and abuse of office, and later sent packing.
A visitation panel was set up by Governor Babatunde Fashola to look into the crisis and make recommendations to government.
A white paper was released recently followed by the appointment of a new vice-chancellor.
Prior to the appointment of a substantive vice-chancellor, Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello gad acted as Acting Vice-Chancellor.
