Stakeholders decry oil firms’ activities

AKURE— STAKEHOLDERS in coastal Communities in Ondo State weekend decried the wanton destruction of their areas by the multinational oil companies through pollution, coastal erosion/sea incursion.

This was contained in a communiqué issued by the Mahin People’s National Conference at a meeting held at Ode-Mahin in Ilaje Local Government Area of the State.

The communities in the communiqué by Secretary General of the Mahin Kingdom Central Organisation, Mr. Olayemi Saanumi, called on the Ondo State Government, the Ondo State Oil Producing Area Development Commission, OSOPADEC, and the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, to put in place immediate and sustainable remedial measures to address the destruction.

The communiqué rejected alleged exploitation of sand materials in the environmentally fragile Mahin riverine territory by construction companies resulting in the creation of artificial lagoons now in several parts of Mahin land.

According to the group the traditional institution in conjunction with the Ondo State Government and Security Agencies were joining forces to curb the menace of kidnapping in the peace-loving Ilaje people of Ondo State.

They lauded the appointment of the Amapetu of Mahin, Oba Lawrence Omowole as the chairmanship of Association of Traditional Rulers of Oil Mineral Producing Communities of Nigeria, TROMPCON.

According to the communiqué “the Mahin people like their counterpart in Ugbo are oil producing and can as well lay claim to the chairmanship of the TROMPCON. The appointment is in accord with the position and roles of the Amapetu of Mahin as a member of the Association from its inception as a monarch of a major Oil Producing Areas of Nigeria.”
