In 2009, former Green Eagles winger, Adokie Amiesimaka stirred the hornets nest with his stinging remarks regarding the age of the captain of the silver-winning national U-17 football team Fortune Chukwudi
His remarks raised a national debate on age cheats in Nigerian football.
Although the World Football governing body, FIFA ignored Adokie’s comments in their usual manner, Chukwudi has since plunged into oblivion, even when most of his former national team mates were called up to the current U-20 team which was ousted by France from the ongoing FIFA U-20 World Cup in Colombia.
Following calls by Nigerians on the national team coach, Samson Siasia to consider some of
them for the Super Eagles, Adokie Amiesimaka has faulted the idea on account of what he termed “as old men.”.
He said Coach Samson Siasia should drop the idea, if he ever gave it a thought, pointing out that most of the players were currently in their 30’s and would not add value to the team.
Speaking to Brilafm.net Adokie declared that the players should be thinking of retiring, as he believes their invitation to the senior team will be nothing but absurd.
“My take on this is that we would be undoing ourselves. These players are too old and it would be absurd to draft in players in their thirties to play for the Super Eagles”
“At thirty a player should think of retirement and I know I played my first match for the Green Eagles when I was just nineteen”
Adokie then harped further that Eagles’ gaffer, Siasia might be on the wrong track as the players are in their prime.
“The players are too old. They are in their 30’s and should be thinking of retirement not playing for the senior team.
Those players we think are U-20 may even be too old for the super Eagles”, he summed up.
