PORT HARCOURT – Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, has queried the wisdom in the recently constituted Federal Government committee to review the report of the United Nations Environmental Programme, UNEP, on Ogoni, Rivers State. The Federal Government recently set up a Review Committee on oil pollution in Ogoniland.
The party, in a statement by its Publicity Secretary, Mr. Jerry Needam, expressed concern that the committee was another attempt by government to create jobs for some party loyalists.
According to the party, what was needed after the release of the UNEP report was a committee of experts, environmental activists, Ogoni stakeholders, among others, who would immediately address the environmental challenges in the area caused by oil pollution.
The party said: “The report on oil pollution in Ogoniland was crystal clear and calls for no further talks but immediate action. Environment experts, environmental activists, Ogoni stakeholders among others, should come together to fashion out immediate remedial measures. Anything short of this should be viewed as another effort to politicise the UNEP report.
“What we have right now is an assemblage of PDP card-carrying members as special Review Committee.”
