8 die in Bauchi auto crash

…as 6 family members die after eating ‘moin-moin’

Bauchi- Eight people lost their lives in an auto crash which occurred along Azare- Potiskum-Kano road, in Bauchi  just as six members of a family also died after eating moi-moi prepared from suspected poisoned bean in Gombi Local Government Area of Adamawa State yesterday.

The accident in Bauchi was said to have occurred about 20 kilometres away from Azare Local Government Area of the state, involved a Honda Accord saloon car with number plate BC 105 ABJ and a Volkswagen Golf commercial vehicle, with number plate AX 462  MAG.

The Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, in Bauchi State, Mr  Zakariya Mamman, who confirmed the incident when he briefed newsmen said the accident occured as a result of over speeding and dangerous overtaking.

He said, “the first vehicle, which is a Honda Accord was going  from Kano to Maiduguri, had a man and a woman in it.

‘’The woman was carrying a one year old baby while the second car, which was golf, was carrying five business men from Damaturu to Kano.

‘’The Golf was trying to overtake another vehicle, which was in front and then collided with the Honda Accord , coming from the other lane of the road”.

Mamman, who stressed that ‘’reckless driving, especially during the rainy season, could be risky’’, said from the investigation carried out by the FRSC, the driver of the Volkswagen Golf had been ferrying passengers for three days without resting.

“A driver is expected to rest for at least 20 minutes in every six hours of driving. There is the need for the National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW,  to monitor the conduct of their members,” he said.

Also, the Adamawa State Police Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police, ASP, Altine Daniel has confirmed the death of the six members of a family after eating the poisoned bean.

Daniel said one Ali Mohammed and other members of his family including his wife, Hauwa his four-year-old son and the deceased’s parents, Alhaji Abdullahi Ali and Yelwa, died shortly after taking the moi-moi to break their Ramadan fast on Tuesday night.
