6-yr tenure plot not new – Emodi

BY VINCENT UJUMADU

AWKA – Presidential Adviser on National Assembly Matters, Senator Joy Emodi, yesterday, said the proposed six-year single tenure for president and governors is not a new development.

Speaking with reporters after a thanksgiving service in her honour at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Onitsha, Emodi recalled that during the 1994/95 Constitutional Conference, the issue of single tenure was canvassed and was indeed, very popular among members.

She said: “I was a member of the 1994/95 Constitutional Conference and the most popular view then was the issue of single tenure. Most members wanted it because they saw it as the only way every section of the country will have opportunity of occupying the presidency.

“I do not see anything wrong with it. The question people should ask is whether it is good for Nigeria and I think it is, since it will give every Nigerian, irrespective of where he comes from, a sense of belonging. Even as a senator, I supported it during the third term debate because I believe in it,” she said.
