ABUJA – A leadership crisis is brewing in the senate over the choice of Senate Leader, as North-East senators are pitched against the Presidency over which zone should produce the majority leader.
While senators from the North East insist the zone should produce the majority leader, it was gathered that the Presidency and Senate President preferred that the South South zone produced the majority leader of the senate.
A senator from the NorthEast who spoke with Vanguard on the issue, said the insistence of the Presidency and Senate President that the South South geo-political zone produced the senate leaders “smacks of an attempt to Christianise the senate leadership.”
The senator, who declined to speak on record, wondered why the decision of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, which had zoned the position to the North East, was being jettisoned by the Presidency.
According to the senator, the caucus has resolved not to accept any position given to them by the party other than that of senate leader.
“The National Working Committee of the PDP had adopted a proposal zoning the position to the region but President Goodluck Jonathan and Senate President, David Mark, are working to deny us the position because the President was said to have insisted that a senator (names withheld) must be the one to become the next senate leader.
“The NWC made the proposal for us to have the position but they said they will have to wait for the president to come back from America to seek his endorsement but when they took it to him, he insisted that the South-South must have the position and the senator must be the one to occupy it.
“Instead of even giving us the next most important position, which is the Senate Whip, they now said we will only be given the deputy leader which is the 5th in line. They have a grand plan of making the Senate to be more of Christian enclave but they won’t succeed because they are only using the platform of Christianity to achieve their selfish interest. That is why many Christian senators, even from the South-South, are not with them,” the senator alleged.
