Former international Uche Okechukwu has backed his Eagles’ defence partner, Austin Eguaveon to succeed with the Under-23 team.
Eguaveon faces a crucial test this weekend as he attempts to stop perennial Nigerian rivals Ghana in the All Africa Games qualifiers at the Ogbe Stadium Benin City.
Okechukwu who watched the team thrash Tanzania last weekend stated that Eguaveon has a good blend of players and should be able to qualify not only for the All Africa Games but the London 2012 Olympics.
“I think these boys can go all whole yard to succeed. They have a lot of time to be molded into a very strong unit because individually, a lot of them are very talented. If the coaches do their home work, I think this team can be as good as the side that won Gold in 1996,” Okechukwu who won gold with the team at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta.
He pleaded with the Nigeria Football Federation to give all the necessary support to the coaches of the team to enable them succeed in their task.
“ We need to support the coaches and be patient with the team. If we are patient with this team, I am sure they will bring so much happiness to Nigerians,” he said.
