10 election observers held hostage in Delta

By Emma Amaize

WARRI- AT least, 10 election observers, working for the Transition Monitoring Group, TMG, were held hostage in three local government areas of Delta State by political thugs, who did not want them to  carry out their duties of monitoring today’s Presidential polls.

The swift count observers were still being held by the thugs at Oghoye, Jakpa, Eghoro, Ogbimbiri in Warri North local government area, Ugborodo in Warri South-West local government area and Aviara, Isoko South local government area as at 12.30 pm.

The political thugs, according to the state coordinator, Oghenejabor Ikimi Esq simply maintained that they did not want election observers in their communities and efforts were on to secure their release as at 1.30 pm.

Save for this incident, the presidential election was remarkably smooth and peaceful in Delta State unlike last Saturday’s National Assembly election, which witnessed the killing of at least four persons and stealing of ballot boxes at Isoko and Ughelli areas of the state.

Information at the disposal of Vanguard showed that electoral materials were distributed on time by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to the various polling units.
