World Cup: Okocha calls for equal support for Falcons

With every action pointing to the fact that the Nigeria Football Association, NFA is keen on bringing a foreign coach to boss Super Falcons coach, Eucharia Uche for the FIFA Women’s World Cup campaign in Germany later in the year, former Super Eagles Captain, Austin Okocha has canvassed support for her to lead the team to the World Cup.

Okocha, himself a member of the NFA Technical Committee denied knowledge of the NFA’s plan to hire a foreign coach for the Falcons but said that Uche who led the Falcons to reclaim the African title in South Africa last year has done well as coach of the team and should be given all the necessary support to succeed.

“Even though I’m a member of the (NFA) technical committee, I’m  not aware of any move to hire a foreign technical adviser for the Falcons. It’s not to my knowledge at all. But come to think of it, I don’t think such is a good idea because, I think the coach of the team has done well and by my estimation, she should be allowed to carry on and complete her assignment,” the former PSG and Bolton  star said.

He advised the NFA to devote more time than ever for the Falcons and the other female national teams because they have been consistently making impact at both  African and world levels more than their male counterparts, adding that the girls should be better appreciated and remunerated.

“They (the female teams) have continued to do us proud in the world but gotten less recognition or remunerated as the men. So, my thinking is that they should be appreciated, they should be given all they need to go to the World Cup and succeed because it’s Nigeria’s image at stake here,”Okocha stressed.

Asked if he thought the Falcons have a chance to do well at the World Cup, the former Enugu Rangers player said “Yes! The can if adequate resources are put at their disposal coupled with good preparation, they have a chance why not? They have been consistent over time and I still feel the potentials are there only if they get support. So, give them equal attention as the male teams then they will go places,” he added.
