Lagos- Nurses in Lagos State hospitals on Tuesday, joined the 12-day-old strike embarked upon by doctors in health institutions in the state.
The doctors resumed their suspended strike on Feb. 4 as the State Government could not meet its part of the agreement to pay them the Consolidated Medical Salary Scale (CONMESS).
Before joining the strike, nurses provided skeletal services to patients who were left unattended to due, to the absence of doctors.
However, the joining of the strike by nurses has left the state’s hospitals totally paralysed.
At the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) on Tuesday it was discovered that skeletal services have been withdrawn.
At the Surulere General Hospital also owned by the State Government, nurses were on ground but not attending to anybody.
A matron at the hospital, Mrs Funke Omiwale said that they decided to join the doctors in solidarity and would not resume work until the demands were met.
“We have decided to join the strike and will not work until their demands are met,’’she said.
Nurses at the General Hospital, Ikorodu were also nowhere to be found and pregnant women were left without ante-natal care.
Mrs Bolanle Oduntan, a pregnant woman, who came for ante-natal care, said she had not been attended to by anybody.
