2011: Stop buying electorate’s conscience, aspirant warns

BENIN CITY — DEPUTY President of the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, and Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, senatorial aspirant in Edo State, Mr. Onikolease Irabor, yesterday, warned his fellow aspirants in the ACN, to stop “buying the conscience of the electorate by inducing them with motorcycles, vehicles and generators.”

Irabor, who lamented that his fellow aspirants in the ACN were indulging in buying the conscience of delegates, who would vote in the primaries, warned delegates to shun such overtures in order not to produce unpopular candidates, who will face candidates of other political parties in the general elections.

He admonished that rather than buy the conscience of the delegates, his fellow ACN aspirants should sell their programmes to the delegates.

Th aspirant, who spoke to newsmen in Benin City, said, “it is not for anybody to come to them and say he
or she wants to share vehicles to people. If I may ask, where did they get the money to buy cars for people, they should be thinking of building the party.

We are talking of primaries which are an internal thing, it has not got to full campaign yet, so I expect them to convince members on what they can do for the people if elected as a Senator.”

“From what they are spending now, it means they are not going there to work. We should emulate people like the Governor Oshiomhole. Look at what he is doing in Edo State. Did he buy any body any motorcycle before he became governor and that is why today, he is working for the people. We need change and our people should not allow themselves to be induced.

“They should tell the people their pedigree and what they have to offer. If I go into buying such things, it means I am cheating the people. The people should be able to ask all the aspirants what they can offer before they can solicit their support.

People should be careful because if they buy into that, it will be dangerous and when such people are elected into office, it will be difficult for them to challenge such people,” he said.
