Before the advent of the Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM), the internet service was not so entrenched in the job of the Journalist, individuals and corporate organisations that engage in voluminous business activities.
When GSM berthed in 2001, no one thought the internet would be one of the main stream services telecommunication companies would be providing, but as things improve, the scope of their activities expanded bringing to fore their capabilities and incapacitation.
Today, virtually all the telecommunication providers render internet services which some of them lay claim to be the best and number one internet service provider.
The introduction of the internet service came along with it captivating Television Commercials (TVCs), radio giggles and expansive billboard display, flyers inclusive in their media campaigns.
However, the introduction of the service has in no small way helped to enhance the activities of individual and corporate organisations.
Never has there been a more challenging period for marketing professionals. Not only did competition assume a fiercer force, during this period, even till now, the market has remained complex, confusing and sometimes confounding as a result of the captivating TVCs deployed by the telecomm companies to sell their wares ( Internet Modems).
On the other hand, the marketing landscape took a different dimension with Ad agencies throwing out Advertising wits, trying to outwit each other in the campaign field; expressing their clients internet modem as the end to discussion, but the most noticeable Ad remains the MTN Fastlink somersaulting lady.
Little time customers bought into their messages, no sooner, the telecomm providers account swelled, but to the chagrin of the customers, what they envisaged with the services were unimaginable.
Today, the story is a tale of sorrow, shame, backwardness, inconsistency and incompetence on the part of the modem owners.
To determine the most active in terms of performance and network availability and the best of the modems in the market, Vanguard’s Media and Marketing unit went to town, to sample opinions and carry out survey of modem users in Lagos, which include high brow business areas like Ikeja, Apapa, Victoria Island, Ikorodu road, Alaba International, Journalists and Business Centre Operators. From survey, the worst that bears the culprit tag; is the MTN and Glo modems, which attracted the most criticism from users.
However, from 1,000 respondents, the result showed that MTN and Glo’s internet platform received 40 and 35 percent bashing respectively from users. Some of the users attributed MTN’s poor performance as a result of congestion on its network.
Probing further, MTN Fastlink modem users noted that MTN has beaten more than they could chew, this they said resulted in the hiccup witnessed on the internet platform.
On the other hand, Glo modem users said despite the much talked about optic fibre cable, that was taunted to propel internet usage, problems with their modem remains unsurmountable, but the advised to Glo was to suspend its internet services for now, until the cables are finally laid.
Starcom Modem remains the safest so far from what is deduced from users. For Zain internet modem, not much was complained as the users are not much, this also was because much people could not be reached to accertain the performance of Zain’s modem.
