Nigeria’s women team, Falconets sailed into the quarter-final of the FIFA Women Under-20 World Cup after playing a 1-1 draw with Mexico in their last group C game in Bochum, Germany.
Ebere Orji put the Nigerian girls ahead in the first half of the game, which the Falconets dominated, but lack of creativity from the midfield denied them more goals.
Mexico’s Natalia Garcia made the Falconets pay in the 79th minute when she controlled the ball and volleyed from close range, Alaba Jonathan in goal for Nigeria had no answer. The result placed Nigeria in the second spot in group C.
Mexico will play South Korea who surrendered their leadership of group D after falling to the USA with a 1-0 loss. Ghana could not make to the next round despite beatiing Switzerland 2-0.
In the other group C game, Japan ran out easy 3_1 winners over England but there was disappointment for them on the final whistle when they learned that it wasn’t enough to carry them into the quarter_finals.
Hosts Germany will face North Korea, and Sweden take on Colombia in the other quarter-final pairings.
