Rehabilitation work slows down on Enugu-Onitsha highway

AWKA—DESPITE an earlier promise that the rehabilitation of Enugu-Onitsha expressway would be completed before this year’s rainy season, work on the road appears to be going on at snail speed.

This prompted Governor Peter Obi of Anambra State to speed up work to save the people from the difficulties of the rainy season.

When Vanguard visited the Onitsha end of Anambra section of the road, it was observed that work had slowed down considerably, even as the contracting firm has scrapped off the tar on one of the lanes, necessitating the use of one lane by motorists.

It was, however, at the Awka end that work appears to be going on, even though Anambra _Enugu states’ border had become almost impassable.

Apparently worried by the situation, Governor Obi recently inspected the Umunya section of the road which has become a nightmare for motorist during which he said the state government was very concerned that some parts of the road posed a great challenge to road users and, therefore, required immediate attention.

The Umunya section of the road is completely water-logged at the area that witnessed multiple accidents earlier in the year during which many lives were lost.

It would appear that the contractors have decided to wait till the end of the rainy season to continue work there.

The governor, however, expressed confidence that the contractor would overcome the present difficulties at Umunya, as he is currently exploring  ways of finding a permanent solution that would check persistent collapse of the area.
