By Emman Ovuakporie
Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Mrs Farda Waziri Wednesday presented a N9, 759,985.27million Cheque to the son of Sergeant Edoga Eze a slained operative of the commission.
Speaking at the cheque presentation ceremony at the Headquarters of the commission, Mrs Waziri said “you will recall that about five of our operatives were attacked by unknown gunmen on March 19, 2010 on their way back to Enugu after their duties at a Federal High Court, Owerri, Imo State.â€
“While others sustained gunshot injuries, Edoga Eze was badly gunned down and died on the spot though it was an attack we foresaw and raised alarm but unfortunately we lost Eze to the bullet of the evil doers.â€
“My spirit is however lifted by what is happening today as it is the first in the history of EFCC, our foresight to initiate insurance cover for our officials and assets will somehow bring some relief and consolation to the family of the deceased because he has not died in vain.â€
“Beside the payment of insurance benefits to the next of kin of the deceased as a mother, I have also taken a decision to pay the fees of one of the orphans for two sessions.â€
Waziri stressed further that “this is our own contribution to boost officers’ morale and encourage them to get more committed to the dangerous battle we have all signed to wage against a major enemy of our nation, corruption.â€
Responding, the next of kin to the Late Sergeant Eze, Master Uchenna Edoga Eze thanked the commission for the kind gesture and prayed for the soul of his slained father.
Present at the ceremony were the wife of Late Eze, Mrs Chika Edoga Eze,  two other children Master Ifeanyi Eze and little Amaka Eze that is barely 14 months old.
