Fire guts Rivers Speaker’s residence

PORT HARCOURT—FIRE  Tuesday afternoon gutted some parts of the official residence of the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Mr Tonye Harry in old GRA area of the state capital, Port Harcourt.
Sources within the compound said valuables running into several millions of naira were consumed in the inferno. According to the sources, the fire started at about 3.15 pm. The Speaker was said to be in Abuja for a meeting of Speakers of the various states when the incident occurred.

Fire fighters from the state government were said to have responded timely to put out the fire. Sources said the fire started from the Speaker’s bedroom.

There were speculations that it might have been caused by electrical fault.
Security aides of the Speaker barred media men from taking closer look at the extent of damage.

At press time, admirers and relatives of the Speaker were trooping to the residence to sympathise with the family.
