I’m fit for World Cup

Mikel Obi re-assures Nigerians

Super Eagles midfielder John Obi Mikel is eager to prove to Eagles coach Lars Lagerback that he is fit for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Obi who has resumed light training is looking forward to playing in the Nigeria versus Colombia friendly to show Nigerians that he can be trusted to shine with the team when they open their world cup account with Argentina on June 12.

“I’m back to full fitness and eager to play. The world cup is a big occasion and I just want to be part of it,”said Mikel in London.

The Chelsea midfielder was sidelined after picking up an injury during the course of the premiership and was forced to miss the remaining games of the season and the FA Cup final against Portsmouth.

Mikel was examined by Nigerian doctors on Monday and was certified fit to play. But coach Lagerback wants Mikel to prove his match fitness before rushing him into his final list of 22 due to be released on June 1.

He missed the friendly against Saudi Arabia played in Vienna, Austria on Tuesday. The only game left for him to play was the Colombia match billed for West Ham’s Upton Park in London. But that match billed for Sunday was a course for concern as West Ham management disagreed with the match organizers.
