OWERRI—Imo State Government has raised an alarm over the rising spate of kidnapping and other violent crimes in the state.

It also described as ridiculous and diversionary, allegations by the opposition that some government officials were involved in the gory deeds.

Secretary to Government of Imo State, Chief Cosmas Iwu, who raised the alarm in a statement in Owerri, condemned the act of brigandage by men of the underworld.

Chief Iwu,  who was reacting to the recent daylight kidnapping of senior citizens of the state, including a judge and a magistrate, noted that the hoodlums are based outside the state.

According to him, “security report available to the government has confirmed that the perpetrators of the evil deeds are based outside from where they take off to strike in Imo State.”

He said it was unfortunate that while the state government was doing all within its power to protect the citizenry, including equipping the police and other security agencies, some disgruntled politicians were inputting impure motives.

He said the state Governor, Chief Ikedi Ohakim had been challenged by the recent criminal activities and was working hard to arrest the situation.

“I want to assure all Imo residents that Governor Ohakim is doing everything humanly possible to ensure your safety and that of your property” Chief Iwu said.

He, however, called on the residents to be vigilant and report to security agencies, any suspicious movement around them.

Chief Iwu charged the police and other security agencies to intensity efforts at crime detection and prevention, saying that government would continue to play its role of protecting the lives and property of the people living in the state.
